200 countries, 500,000 miles, 23 years

We’ve been traveling fulltime now for close to 21 years, leaving behind a “stick” house back when our son was just 18 months old in 1992 and living on wheels ever since. It’s difficult to find others who have been traveling as long as or longer than we have. So we tend to get excited when we hear of somebody.

Meet Gunther Holtorf and his trusty vehicle “Otto”. Gunther and his wife, who passed in 2010, have taken “Otto” all around the world. They began their journey in 1989. In accordance his wife’s wishes, Gunther continued what started out as an 18 month journey.  Next year Gunther and Otto will complete the last leg and the car will retire at the Mercedes museum in Stuttgart, Germany. We aren’t quite sure how they’ve managed to get one vehicle to do over 500,000 miles when ours seem to only last a year or two for the most part.

Now 74 years old, Gunther has always shunned technology; he has no website or blog to report his remarkable trek. (We had no technology when we started out either, but nobody else did then.) But he does have some amazing photographs he’s taken with a couple of rather antiquated cameras.

You can read more about their travels over at Digital Trends and watch a slide-show of Gunther’s remarkable travel photos with audio commentary on the BBC’s site

Gunther, we are inspired by your incredible journey!

  1. Just found another article that chronicles their travels in the Philippines and in which Gunther divulges some of the secrets to Otto’s longevity.
